Let's talk about the birds and the bees

I thought I would have a quick show and tell this afternoon.  Last year around this time I came across this picture on the internet.

I e-mailed it to my Mom and asked "Isn't this cute?"  "I wish I could do that."  She said "oh, I would like you to make that one for me"  So I searched and found Mickey Depre, so glad I did! I got her book Garden Whimsy Applique.  I love it, such cute patterns.  

I decided I would try it. I made this wall hanging for my Mom for Christmas.

Sorry, this is the only picture I have. I didn't have a blog back then and didn't take pictures of my progress. I didn't do my borders that well, I was pretty new at this. It was so much fun I decided to make one of the other patterns for my daughter. Again only one picture. 

Aren't these bees cute too!

Fred cat woke me up at 4:30

Well, you know he was going to starve to death I am sure...NOT! After I fed him I tried to go back to sleep but since it is Saturday I get to quilt! I kept thinking about quilting so I got up at 5:00 am and started the day. 12 hours later I am done. I did laundry too, such fun.  I have until Sept 5th to finish Grease but I can't get it out of my head so I started with my main block today. Thanks to the craftsy video by Lola Jenkins and Leah Day's useful information about how to break my FMQ foot to make it better. I did notice a big difference when I decided to break the FMQ foot in the middle of this project. The foot was bouncing all over the place until I did that. It was much better and more stable after.

 

I sketched this for the 3rd time with less detail, so that I could do more stitching and less drawing.

Since this was my very first attempt I kept watching Lola's Thread Art over and over while working on this.

  

Sandy's hair, I just went all over the place, you know that hairdo is Krazy!

Time for the colored pencils. I used prismacolor but, you can use any kind.

Done....I think.  I can always add more color and stitching later if I change my mind. Next will be a paper pieced Treble Clef and then Greased Lightning (the car). Until tomorrow, have a Kwilt Krazy night!



Grease is the word, is the word, is the word

In case you didn't already know. I am going to enter my first quilt challenge.  The theme is “Movies” so I decided I would go with Grease. My main block will be based on this picture.

 I bought a craftsy class a while back called Thread Art by Lola Jenkins.  You take a picture, trace the image, stitch the image, and then color it in with water colored pencils. Yes, I am Krazy to even try such a thing for my first ever quilt challenge. I don’t have photoshop or anything like it so I downloaded Photosketch free from the internet. I uploaded the picture and then converted it to a sketch drawing. 

Here is what it looked like the first time.  I traced it with a sharpie.

  Not too bad, Danny looks ok but Sandy is kind of scary LOL.  So, I think I will trace it one more time. I was upset that I ruined my fabric, you can use erasable pens but I didn’t do that :(  I hate to waste any fabric, even an inch.  Kind of like gardening, I was scared to prune anything at first. Such cute green plants popping up from the ground. I finally learned it really does help the plants if you prune them.  I think I need to trace less of the details like hair and such.  I can always sketch more later if need be, but this is supposed to be filled in with water colored pencils and free motion stitching.  Fingers crossed for the next try, we will see. Kwick Krazy Story

Yesterday while walking out to my car to go to work I noticed a bird on the feeder, sitting with feathers puffed up not moving at all. Other birds were flying near and he still didn’t move.  I was concerned so I walked over to him and he still just sat there with his eyes closed.  DH was watching from the screened porch.  I said “awe I wonder if he is sick” “should I get him some water”?  I took this picture of him. 

I didn’t touch him but moved my head around from side to side to see if I could find an injury.  All of a sudden he woke up and flew right into my face and up to a tree.  So apparently my phone took a picture of that too...notice my toe and the picture is blurry because I jumped back and almost fell down.

DH was laughing pretty good.  He should have had a video camera in hand.  I guess the birdie was sound asleep. Well, off to the lake and we are going to stop by a lovey quilt shop on the way! Yay! Quilt Lizzy. Until next time have a Kwilt Krazy day!

It's a Sunny Day!

Yay! Sunshine! Well, since it rained all day yesterday I was able to stay inside and sew rather than work outside in the yard.  I thought I better post pictures of my recently completed project before July is over.  I started this last year and finished right before the 4th. It didn't take me that long I just had it in my UFO pile and pulled it out in June to finish it.  This is a pattern that Debbie Powell gave us at Miss Lou's.  This was my first try at paper piecing.  Not too bad :)

This is the last block with strip piecing and applique.

 

Oops I just noticed I forgot to do the satin stitch around the stars. Won't take too long I may do that today.

I am going to start taking pictures of my progress during future projects.  It would have been nice to see my mistakes so I could laugh at myself.  At the time it is not so funny, I hate ripping out seams.  Looking back at things though when you finally complete something you get a great feeling of accomplishment.  Thank you seam ripper :)  Have a Kwilt Krazy Day!



 



Bahk from De Bahamas Mahn!

Just got back from our Disney Cruise to the Bahamas!

Twas relaxing mahn!  I am nice and burnt :)  I was having quilting withdrawals.  It felt odd to be so far from a sewing machine but I needed a vacation.  My first day back I had a meeting with the Vance County quilt guild.  We are planning a fun time in September with a lecture from Amy Winsor, and there will be a workshop with Amy the following day. We will have a quilt challenge the night of the lecture and the guests will be judging. The theme is "Movie" the quilt should be no larger than 30 x 30 and should include paper piecing, embellishment, and applique.  This will be my first entry into a quilt challenge.  I thought of all kinds of movies.  Jaws, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Little Orphan Annie, Star Wars, my head was spinning.  I think I have decided it will be Grease.  Sandy and Danny!  Whoo hoo hoo honey! Once I start the project I will post pictures of my progress.  Until next time have a Kwilt Krazy night!

Oh Happy Day!!

I joined my first ever swap.  It was a tote bag swap, hosted by lia*s handmades.  My secret partner was a 7 year old girl that likes cats and bright colors.  Here is the one that I made for her. 

Yesterday my husband called me at work and said “there’s a package here for you” He knew what I had been waiting for :)  I couldn’t wait to get home.  I was so excited! Everything was neatly wrapped in different colored tissue paper.  Here is my bag.

Isn’t it wonderful?  I love all the detail and the paper pieced rooster yee haw! 

I didn’t even tell my partner that I love farm animals.  The lining has pigs,cows, birds, etc... It has wonderful wide straps and several pockets and even a key ring!  Check out the goodies that came too! 

Fat quarters, and a large roll of vinyl fabric, and….fresh honey (she is a beekeeper) Oh boy! I can’t wait til the next swap.
